Scrolls for Android

  • #1

    What's up, Scrolldiers? Enjoying the game, are we?

    Well, here's some more good news! Scrolls is now playable on Android. We know Mojang will probably release an official Android & iOS version in the future, but we couldn't wait to play this game on our portable devices everywhere where we have a suitable internet connection. This is the main reason we have started porting the game to Android, and we think it's time to show you the progress!

    While we won't release this port before permission from Mojang's side, the game is fully playable already (both singleplayer and multiplayer). We will be focussing on polishing the graphics from now on until they look as shiny as the PC version (screenshots below).

    It's not a direct port from the original Unity code to Android, the game's been rewritten in native Java. This ensures maximum performance and doesn't limit the graphical changes we had to make to make the game look good on small screens.

    <center>
    This is a screenshot of the hand, scrolls stack neatly if there's not enough space to line them up next to eachother. We're still trying to find a way to properly display the stats and cost of the scroll, it's still a little messy right now. The blank space below the name and stats is reserved for the image of the scroll.</center><center>
    </center><center>
    </center><center>
    This is the first spawned creature on our side of the board, creatures turn a little opaque when their countdown is zero and they're going to attack at the end of the turn. This will look like the PC version soon, where a white overlay indicates that a creature is about to attack.</center><center>

    </center><center>
    This is a little further into the game, you can see the first damaged Idol here, on the opponent's side of the board. Again, the opaque Brother of the Wolf is about to attack.</center><center>
    </center><center>
    </center><center>
    You will be notified of your opponent's actions through small messages that appear on-screen during the opponent's actions. Those messages will automatically disappear after a short period of time and don't hinder the game in any way.</center><center>
    </center>

    (All backgrounds have been used for this app)

    While this project is still very early in development, we'll keep you up-to-date on the progress as we're going to keep working on it until we're satisfied with the final product. Suggestions on how to improve the look of the port are always welcome, post your opinions and thoughts!

    Screenshots were taken directly from a Samsung Galaxy SII. This app has been tested on both tablets and phones, and it's created in such a way that it dynamically fits all screen sizes and resolutions. The Easy AI was used for this test.

    Yes. Although 2.2 or higher is recommended, 2.1 works jus as well.

    This looks great! Amazing job, hopefully Mojang supports this port and more people can, somewhat, experience the same.

    Alpha tester, feel free to ask questions.

    Is there any chance, that you make the make the parts of the Network API you discovered public or at least that you send them to me via pm?

    I would probably like to do something similar, but if somebody else has already messed around with the network code, there is no need for me to do this. ^^

    No, this is a (well, almost :p ) exact copy of the official PC game, meaning it uses the in-game AI as well. You can, of course, still select the ScrollsBot from the Arena to battle against him. The commands for ScrollsGuide work in this version as well.

    Not too hard to spot imo.

    Wow very nice work here, if Mojang confirms, will this be a free or paid app?

    This is awesome, although there is a lot of room for improvement, especially in terms of the UI.

    Yes, although there's a debug file (txt) in the game folders which should hold all information you require. If you can't find it or still not sure about the exact functions, shoot me a pm :)

    That's true indeed, it's being worked on :)

    Since phone screens are really small it's hard to find right spots for text sometimes.

    After a lot more bugfixes and graphical updates, here's a new screenshots:

    The stats for the scrolls on the game board still don't look fantastic, but at least they're there now:

    The highlight when a scroll's countdown is zero is now a glow instead of the opacity change from before. The alignment is two or three pixels off but that's been fixed already. The number of resource indicator at the top of the screen also got a little update, it's way clearer now.
