I can't see why that is a problem? If a new library will come, than you learn a new one, and problem solved. Without jQuery in ‘naked’ JS you would need to handle the different browsers, and it would increase the developement time by 300% if not more. Seriously, this is a bit like saying: “Don't get too attached to your washing machine, because than you can't wash with hand.”
Also, try to focus on one language first. It does not matter if you pick JS, ANSI C, C# or Ruby, since the core concepts are the same. JS is actually a very good pick, because you can use it while creating websites, for „quick wins”, and also has quite a lot of great and well documented libraries (I suggest jQuery first).
December was way back in the cloud-shrouded past, yet still no open beta or new alpha invites? That is so very-very sad. Even more sad than my broken English.
